Restoration works of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Tokaçlı Quarter of Altınözü District of Antioch started.
The restoration work in the Meryem Ana (Virgin Mary) Greek Orthodox Church initiated with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The restoration work is also aiming the cleaning of the old stones covered with plaster and giving them their old appearance.
Tokaçlı District Mayor İbrahim Çilingir stated that they have been working for 2 years for the restoration work to start. Thanks to the fund of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism the restoration will start soon.
”The church will be closed for 4 months“
The Mayor Çilingir said that the church will be closed for 4 months. During the external façade restoration, the community will be able to use the church but when the work will start inside, another suitable place will be found in the village for worship.
”The Historical stones will appear like in the old times“
The Mayor Çilingir said that the original stones of the building are covered with plaster and these will be cleaned. The restoration will be supervised by the regional directorate of foundations. The historical texture of the building will not change, and the work will be over within a period of 6 months.
Altunozu Governor Bülent Uygur thanked the Deputy of Antioch Hüseyin Yayman for the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism who will pay the restoration expenses of the church.
