Balıklı Surp Sarkis Chapel and Altımermer Surp Hagop Church reopened to worship

Surp (Saint) Sarkis chapel and Samatya, Altımermer Surp (St.) Hagop Church, in the Balıklı Armenian Cemetery, which were closed to worship because of construction work, reopened to worship with the ceremonies held under the presidency of Turkey’s Armenians Patriarch Sahak II, on February 5 2021, on friday.

The ceremonies were attended by the clergy and religious officials affiliated to the Patriarchate office, members of the Sahakyan Choir, members of the board of directors of the Samatya Surp Kevork Church Foundation and the officers of the Balıklı Cemetery.

Arriving in Balıklı Cemetery, His Beatitude the Patriarch was welcomed by the clergy and the chapel responsibles at 10:00 and the blessing ceremony began.

First, the door was knocked three times with the hymn “patz mez der” (God, open to us), then patriarch being in the first place, the clergy and the administrators of the patriarchate who were present at the ceremony entered the church.

The church was blessed with Surp Muron (Holy Oil) accompanied by prayers and chants. His Beatitude the Patriarch also blessed the wooden altar of the church, which was renewed during the renovation works, and the new painting of the Saint Sarkis Chapel, which is a copy of the main altar painting in the Samatya Surp Kevork Church. At the end of the ceremony, His Beatitude the Patriarch, while blessing those responsible for the Surp Sarkis Chapel, thanked those who contributed materially and spiritually to the cleaning of the chapel.

After the ceremony in Balıklı, Patriarch Sahak II arrived at the Surp Hagop Church at 11.30 am. Members of the women’s branch of the church also attended the ceremony in Altımermer. After His Beatitude the Patriarch arrived at the church, the reopening ceremony of the church began.

Patriarch Sahak II. Blessed by anointing the church altars, the baptism pool, the saints’ paintings with the “surp muron” (holy oil) accompanied by prayers and chants.

After the blessing, prayers were read at noon, and then His Beatitude the Patriarch gave a sermon. In his sermon in a nutshell;

He shared his satisfaction with the renovation of the prayer house and on this occasion he blessed those who contributed to the cleaning of the church. His Beatitude the Patriarch, reminding that believers are also the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, emphasized the importance of trying to remain sacred. On this occasion, he thanked Aleksan Kumaş, who was philanthropic in the renovation of the church, and blessed the women’s branch of the church. His Beatitude the Patriarch stated that he was praying for the coronavirus to lose its effect and for the Altımermer Church to return to a preaching and prayer home as it used to be.
