The meeting between the Ecumenical Patriarch of Istanbul Bartholomew I and the Archbishop of Athens Ieronimos is cancelled at the last moment. According to Greek news sources, Athens and Istanbul claimed having the property rights of the Prompona Farm.
It was declared that the meeting was canceled due to the intense schedule of Ieronimos. But this statement was not found satisfactory in Greece. Because is not seen in the recent history any meeting between the spiritual leader of the Orthodox world with the Greek Archbishop.
News sources in Athens claim that the basis of cold winds between the parties is based on economic interests. Since the farm was an immovable property, the parties brought the matter to the Greek judiciary and the Greek judiciary, after the judicial process, accepted the Istanbul Patriarchate’s claims.
As it is known, in the 19th century the Kingdom of Greece gained its independence from the Istanbul Patriarchate with a treaty and it became autonomous in own internal affairs. The parties had recently discussed the status of the churches in northern Greece.
