Father Massimiliano Palinuro Appointed to Istanbul Latin Catholic Spiritual Representative

Pope Francis has appointed the Reverend Father Massimiliano Palinuro to the Latin Catholic Spiritual Representative in Istanbul today.

While the appointment of Father Massimiliano Palinuro was greeted with joy by the Catholic community, Father Massimiliano Palinuro issued a letter of thanks after his appointment:

”His Most Reverend Excellency Mons. Lorenzo Piretto

İzmir Emeritus Archepiscopal

Istanbul Apostolic Administrative Representative,

Clergy, Priests and Sisters at the Istanbul Apostolic Representation

Pastoral workers and secular believers,

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus,

In obedience to the will of God as expressed by His Holiness Pope Francis, I come to you in the name of the Lord as your Bishop. I cannot hide my fear of obeying in this way. I leave with a sad heart my beloved Church in Trabzon, which is affiliated with the Anatolian Apostolic Representation region, which has increased my faith, and my congregation, which I have tried to serve with loving devotion in recent years. Moreover, I feel overwhelmed by the weight of a task far beyond my power. Thus the mystery of the Lord’s choices is renewed in my life: “He chose what the world saw as unimportant, despicable, unworthy, to destroy what the world saw as important.” (1 Cor 1,28).

From this moment on, I ask you to accept me in good faith and to help me as I adapt to the extremely complex reality of church and society that I think I do not know enough.

I understand very well the special calling of the Istanbul Catholic Church: We are called to be a bridge between the West and the East, between the Latin Church and the Eastern Church. I want to walk side by side with you because together we are determined to break down the centuries-old wall of enmity and change mutual distrust and ancestral prejudices. I am conscious of the fact that there is “one Synodal Church – through which we move together – an ‘exiting Church’, an Annunciation of the Gospel with its ‘open doors’” (Documento Preparatorio della XVI Assemblea Generale Ordinaria del Sinodo dei Vescovi, n. 15).

With reverence and humility, I enter a path paved by my Venerable Predecessors. First of all, I pay homage to S. E. Mons.  Ruben Tierrablanca: The path he started with his apostolic zeal and wise initiatives will be the starting point of the journey that will continue in the church, which was interrupted by his untimely departure from us. I greet Emeritus Apostolic Representative S. E. Mons. Louis Pelatre with deep respect, who served generously in his long episcopate. I ask him to support me with his prayers and advice. I thank especially the Archbishop of Izmir Emeritus S. E. Mons. Lorenzo Piretto for guiding in his role as Representative with wisdom and gentleness through these difficult months. I would also like to express my gratitude to the esteemed Deputy Representative P. Pawel Szymala, who diligently assisted S. E. Mons Piretto during this period.

Dear Brothers, I come to you, taking the Bible as the only program, to proclaim the joy of the Risen Lord and to testify to the Father’s merciful love for the poor and grieving. We will continue to be a martyred Church in the diaspora that pays special attention to the needy, the suffering and the refugees. By loving one another in brotherly devotion and competing to show respect (see Rom 12:10), we will seek to give reliable testimony to the Bible. I believe that our Apostolic Representation, by walking together and knowing the value of the God-given gifts (charisma) in each of us, will be the fertile seed planted by the Divine Planter in the lands of our beloved Turkey so that the Sovereignty of God may sprout. May the Lord be happy with each of us, be pleased with our apostolic devotion, and never be ashamed of his disciples.

In this pilgrimage to faith, our Lady, Mother Mary of Ephesus, be our companion with motherly love; Our Patron Saints, the Apostle St. Andrea, St. John the golden-mouthed, and St. XXIII. John may support us with their prayers.”
