The eternal sleep of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated on August 15 every year, was commemorated this year in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Mikail and St. Gabriel in Mersin, with a ceremony conducted by Father İspir Teymur.
At the end of the 14-day fasting of the Virgin Mary, which was held in accordance with the traditions of the Orthodox Church, the Holy Mass was performed with wide participation, as August 15 of this year coincided with Sunday.
According to the information given by the history of the church, the Virgin Mary fell asleep in the city of Getsamani, near Jerusalem, between 52 and 59 AD, and was taken to heaven with her body by Jesus Christ 3 days after her death.
The commemoration of the Virgin Mary on August 15, where this miraculous event is celebrated, is completed by the believers, who fast for 14 days, end their fast with various activities.
