Mehmet Gergerli, who gives cycling training in Şanlıurfa, talked about his disappointment with what he saw after his trip to Germuş Church.
“I have a Hard Time Describing My Feelings”
Gergerli said, “Each foundation of the church columns has been dug. The whole place is riddled with holes by treasure hunters. It’s in utter disgrace. “I have a hard time describing the feelings I have” he said. Stating that the place of worship, chat room, dining hall and guest house next to the church were destroyed due to neglect, Gergerli added that the authorities should take care of the historical church so that it does not be destroyed.
“Germus is a Very İmportant Place for Tourism”
Gergerli says that when the necessary maintenance and repairs are made, Germus can be a very important place in terms of tourism and it will be a profit for Urfa, and he expects the authorities to do what is necessary in this regard.
It is estimated that the Germus Armenian Church was built in the 17th century. Restored by Hagop Ardvisyan in 1881, the church is now in danger of collapse and abandoned to its fate. The region, also known as ‘Dağeteği’, is 10 km away from the center of Şanlıurfa. (timeturk)
