In Trabzon, a hate attack took place in the cemetery of the Santa Maria Catholic Church, which had brought to the agenda due to the martyrdom of its parish priest Andrea Santoro.
Zehra Çolak, from the congregation of the Santa Maria Catholic Church, died on 17 January. After the religious ceremony held in the church on 18 January, she was buried in the cemetery of the church in Aya Filbo (Arafilboyu) neighborhood, which is 500 meters close to the church. A wooden cross was temporarily placed on the grave. According to the information obtained from those who attended the burial ceremony, a small group of people tried to sabotage the burial ceremony and crying out saying “Allahu Akbar”.
Veysel Çolak, who visited the grave of his wife 10 days ago, on 4 February, came across a shocking reality when he visited again on 14 February. Çolak, who went to his wife’s grave, saw that the cross placed temporarily was not in place. Investigating around the grave, Veysel Çolak saw that the wooden cross was broken and burned near the grave.
Listening to the witness of Çolak, the Trabzon Police Department launched an investigation by taking images of the grave and the burned cross.
It was learned that the cross was tried to be stolen while the grave of Çolak was excavated. A person who covered his face entered in the cemetery with a dog and tried to steal the cross. He also attacked the children playing in the cemetery upon their reaction and then he escaped. While the investigation is initiated to capture the perpetrators by the Trabzon Police Department, the prosecutor’s office will carry the incident to the court upon Veysel Çolak’s plaintiff.
