Historical Church Revealed When Dam Waters Receded

Miyadin Church, located on the borders of Çemişgezek, came to light as the water level decreased in Keban Dam Lake between Elazığ and Tunceli. The church, which still maintains its existence with its 4 walls in the valley, also draws attention with its nature, location and view.

Miyadin Church, located in the valley on the shore of the Keban Dam Lake in the Gemici region of the Alçılı village of the Çemişgezek district of Tunceli, came to light for the first time in many years after the waters receded. It is noteworthy that although a large part of the church, which is stated to have a history of approximately 300 years, remained under water, its structure remained intact.

The church, which stands out over the years, can be reached in approximately 2.5 hours by boat or walking distance over the water. Village residents want the region, which is located in the valley in the triangle of Elazığ, Tunceli and Erzincan, to attract attention with its location, nature and unique view, to be brought into tourism.

Stating that the church is in the village of Alçılı, one of the residents of the village, Fatih Karatepe, said, “We arrived at the Miyadin church after 2 hours with walking distance. It is a church built hundreds of years ago. The waters have receded a lot this year. Because of this, the church came to light. Its four walls have stood for centuries. Despite being submerged in water, it still preserves itself. This is a unique place with its natural beauty and surroundings. A historical and cultural heritage. We want this heritage to be preserved. Our district governor also takes care of our cultural and natural heritage. So thank you. We’ve never been this far inside. Because it was underwater. Only the tops of the walls were visible. I came here when I was 5 years old. We could only see from the top of the walls. I got in this year. The waters of the Keban dam have receded and this place has come to light. We want this place to be brought into tourism” he said.

Zekeriya Dilmen, one of the residents of the village, who stated that the road to the church is very steep, said, ”Even if you can go in an hour, you cannot return in 2.5 hours. It has a distance of 1.5 kilometers. But it is very difficult to go on foot as it is very steep. The valley continues until Erzincan. The church is at the water’s edge of the valley. The water born from that valley goes all the way to Kemaliye district. It is a wonderful place worth seeing that can attract tourists. Before the Keban dam was full, we used to call it spa. There is also hot water in that area, but it is under the dam. According to my grandfather, the place where the church is located was the village where 20 families lived, even the money changer. In ancient times. It’s very worn out. The treasurers dug it and ripped its stones” he said. (Haberturk)
