Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Monsignor Lorenzo Piretto Dominiken (O.P.), who continues his Spiritual Leadership of the Archbishop of Izmir, from the pastoral administration.
His Holiness Pope appointed the Reverend Father Martin Kmetec Franciscan Conventual (OFM Conv), who is still serving as the Conventual Congregation Chief Priest in Istanbul Büyükdere, as the Spiritual Head of the Latin Catholic Archbishop of Izmir Metropolitan on 8 December 2020.
S. E. Monsignor Martin Kmetec OFM Konventual was born on 10 November 1956 in Ptuj, Slovenia. He completed his corporate training on Theology and Philosophy in the Episcopal Territory of affiliation in Slovenia. He took an oath on September 25, 1977 and entered the clerical life. He took his oath constantly on October 4, 1982. He completed his specialization in Dialogue and Religions at Ljubliana University and received his PhD in Theology. Besides the Slovenian language, he speaks Turkish, English, French, Italian, Arabic and Croatian.
Appointed as Priest on July 29, 1983
Between 2001-2006 and 2008-2010, he served as the high priest of St. Helena Church in İzmir Karşıyaka.
He held various positions in the Congregation to which he was affiliated: Rectorate Seminar for Minors, priesthood in Lebanon, and chief priesthood in various monasteries.
Between 2014-2018, he served as the Holy Land and Eastern Region Apostolic Administrator. Although he was in the Büyükdere Santa Maria Monastery between 2011-2020, he has been serving as the high priest only since 2018.
Until the new Archbishop took over, His Holiness the Pope appointed Monsignor Lorenzo Piretto as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archbishopric in order to ensure that the usual activities of the Izmir Diocese are carried out normally.
