One of Turkey’s most important historical, touristic and belief places, Sumela Monastery in Maçka district of Trabzon, on the foothills of Montenegro, where thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit, reached the final in the start of restoration work in 2015.

In the monastery, the “slope improvement work” carried out with a special team of industrial mountaineers in order to prevent the rocks and ice masses from falling and causing negativity has been completed.

The teams carried out rock cleaning in an area of approximately 80 thousand square meters with a work carried out in 3 stages. With the works, 4 thousand tons of rock cleaning was done in the area.

CABLE CAR PROJECT GOES OUT TO TENDER

A project was prepared for the cable car project in the monastery, where visitors can see from different angles by building a viewing terrace. Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality will implement the cable car line, which will be approximately 2.5 kilometers long, with a build, operate, transfer model.

In the project, a cable car line with 40-person wagons will be established. The project, which will consist of 2 stations, will cost 150 million lira.

“INVESTORS WANTED”

Stating that there are several investors interested in the project, Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Murat Zorluoğlu said, “We have completed the cable car project for Sümela Monastery that we have been dealing with for a long time. It will be an investment of approximately 150 million lira. A 2-stop cable car is projected. The first stop will be located at a very beautiful point in Altındere Valley.

Those who get on the cable car will go to the first stop with a magnificent view over the pine forests of Altındere Valley. They will come to an area where there are viewing terraces and a few hours to spend. As a second stop, the cable car comes to a point very close to Sümela Monastery. From there, visits to Sumela will take place. We have completed the project. We are currently looking for investors.

There are several investors interested in the project. Hopefully, when we go out to tender, we will realize the investment that will add attraction to Sumela when it is completed in 2 years with the build-operate-transfer model. As the Metropolitan Municipality, we are building social facilities at the last point before arriving in Sumela. We are building restaurants, quality places where local shopping can be made. We desire that after completing these works, our Ministry of Culture proposes Sumela that we can transfer it to the permanent list from the world’s temporary heritage list. “We are fighting for this” he said.
