The walls of the Aya Dimitri Greek Orthodox Church in Istanbul Fatih – Ayvansaray neighborhood were destroyed by writing inscriptions by unidentified people, and the residents of the neighborhood reported this to the authorities. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Cultural Heritage cleaned the walls of the historical church.
The statement regarding the incident came from Mahir Polat, Deputy Secretary General of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Polat made a statement on his social media account Twitter; “The residents of the neighborhood informed us that the historical walls of the Balat Aya Dimitri Church were in a very bad condition. Our İBB Heritage restoration team immediately intervened and cleaned. This is exactly why IMM Heritage exists, but please, let’s protect the historical sanctuaries together,” he said.
The residents of the neighborhood, who saw the walls of the church as cleaned, expressed their satisfaction and thanked the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Cultural Heritage and its team.
