According to the report of The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in 2020, when Russia has become the country that convicts the most, Turkey took the second place. However Turkey, as in 2019, has become the European country where freedom of expression is most violated in 2020.
At the press conference held at the court’s headquarters in Strasbourg, data on the ECHR’s work last year was announced.
The ECHR announced decisions in 871 cases last year. While it was decided that at least one article of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was violated in 762 of the cases, no violation was found in 84 of them. 6 of the cases were resolved amicably, 24 of them were resolved by other means.
Which Countries Are There the Most Pending Lawsuits?
As at 31 December 2020 22.4 percent of the pending cases to be decided in the ECHR from Russia, and the application form from 18.1 per cent in Turkey.
These countries are followed by Ukraine with 16.8 percent, Romania with 12.2 percent and Italy with 5.6 percent. Applications against these countries equal 75 percent of the total files.
However, from 2019 until the end of last year, applicants from Turkey increased by 27 percent. ECHR President Robert Spano, said this increase is due after July 15 coup attempt in Turkey the lawsuits in the Turkish courts started to be concluded.
In recent years, a number of applications based in Turkey, is based on the article of the ECHR concerning the right to a fair hearing.
Turkey’s 2020 ECHR Ratings
in ECHR of 2020, has announced a total of 97 judgments concerning Turkey, which was not detected any violations in 6, a case resulted in amicable solutions, while five cases resulted in other ways.
In a total of 85 cases, it was concluded that at least one article of the ECHR was violated. (euronews)
