The Hittite seal, which was found by a farmer in the Ortaköy district of Çorum while working in the field, and estimated to be about 3,500 years old, was added to the Çorum Museum collection with the initiatives of Çorum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi and Ortaköy Mayor Taner İspir.
While working in his field, a farmer found the seal, which is considered to belong to the Hittite era, in Şapinuva town of Ortaköy district, which is home to the ancient city of Şapinuva, one of the important cities that served as the capital of the Hittite state.
When Ortaköy Mayor Taner İspir became aware of the issue, he convinced the farmer he contacted to deliver the historical artifact he found to the Çorum Governor’s Office. İspir visited Çorum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi with the farmer who found the artifact and handed over the seal. In the first examination made by Çorum Museum experts upon the instruction of Governor Çiftçi, it was determined that the seal, which was determined to be a “hammer-headed stamp seal”, may belong to the Old Hittite Age, which covers the years 1650-1400 BC.
Stating that there are many artifacts belonging to the Hittites, one of the greatest civilizations of history, in Ortaköy, İspir said, “Our district is extremely rich in terms of historical artifacts. Many archaeological studies are carried out that will shed light on history. Finally, we think that the seal found is an artifact that will enrich the archaeological richness of our district.”
Emphasizing that they are happy to bring an important work to the state, İspir said, “We have done our civic duty. Such works strengthen the tourism potential of our province and district.” he said.
