Surp Toros Gregorian Armenian Church, built in the 18th century in Kayseri Melikgazi, was destroyed. Neighborhood Headman Mehmet Yılmaz said, “The situation we see hurts us.”
Surp Toros Gregorian Armenian Church, which was built in Kayseri in the 18th century, was destroyed due to a treasure claim. Saying that the church should be taken under protection, Tavlusun Neighborhood Headman Mehmet Yılmaz said, “The situation we see hurts us. “We have to fight to get rid of them,” he said.
According to the news in DHA, a pit about 2 meters deep was dug in a room of the Surp Toros Gregorian Armenian Church in the Tavlusun District of Melikgazi district. The walls of the church were also damaged by writing inscriptions with spray paints. The destroyed church is waiting to be taken under protection.
Providing information about the church, Tavlusun Neighborhood Headman Mehmet Yılmaz said, “This is an Armenian church built in the 1800s. Armenian citizens here used this church before the population exchange period. After the exchange period, some of the people around filled straw here, and some damaged it. This place needs to be restored and brought into tourism. Because there are citizens coming from abroad. People living there don’t want to see the area like this when they come here. While most of the places have been restored, we want Tavlusun to be restored in the same way in the historical buildings in our region.”
“WE HAVE TO FIGHT”
Yılmaz said, “The situation we see hurts us. We believe that if the restoration work on this issue starts, the treasure hunters will be kept away. Treasure hunters dig these places for their own benefit without calculating that it will damage the historical texture. Random damage is done here. We have to fight to get rid of them,” he said.
On the other hand, according to the information received from the officials of the Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate, it was reported that the restoration of the historical church could not be carried out because it is a private property. (NEWS CENTER)
