Restoration work in the 1600-year-old Mor Kiryakus Monastery, built by the Assyrians in the 5th century, on the skirts of Batman Kıra Mountain, has come to an end. The historical monastery is expected to welcome its first guests towards autumn.
The Mor Kiryakus Monastery, located in the Ayrancı village on the skirts of Kıra Mountain in Batman’s Beşiri district and built by Assyrian Christians in the 5th century, was taken under protection by the Batman Museum Directorate in 2014. The monastery, which was built on an area of approximately 2.5 decares, consists of 3 floors with an underground floor extending underground with corridors. The monastery, which was active until the 1940s, got into a state of inactivity after the last congregation migrated from the region. Thereupon, the round fan depicting the face of an angel seated on a scepter, a circle hand fan shaped around like a rattle, a bell weighing about 100 kilograms, many manuscripts, Gospels and other artifacts found in the monastery were taken to the Mor Gabriel Monastery in the Midyat district of Mardin and taken under protection.
AUTHENTIC RESTORE
In the renovation work initiated under the coordination of Batman Governorship, Dicle Development Agency, Special Provincial Administration, Culture and Tourism Directorate, the entrance gate, the entire south front, the burial chamber and the east side of the burial chamber and all the rooms on the second floor of the 1600-year-old monastery, were renewed. With the restoration works carried out for 4 years in accordance with its original texture and historical structure, the passenger reception areas and the rooms in the inner courtyards have been revealed in accordance with their original form. Beşiri District Governor Mahmut Şener examined the restoration work of the Mor Kiryakus Monastery on site; which is about to be completed.
