Greek Orthodox in Mersin Spend the Fasting Period with Rites

Orthodox people living in Mersin, one of the regions where the Orthodox population in our country is quite dense, started the ‘Lent’ Period. Orthodox in Mersin will spend this period, which will last until Easter, with special prayers and rituals every week.

The rites performed by Church Father İspir Teymur, “Holy Aftersupper Prayer” at 17:00 every Tuesday and Thursday during the Lent period, “Holy Mysterious Rite” every Wednesday at 10:00, “Prayer of Praise to the Virgin Mary” every Friday at 17:00 and the Holy Sunday Masses are held between 09:00 and 11:00 on Saturdays due to the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic.

Before the Resurrection Day of the Orthodox Churches, the “Lent” started with the Not Eating White Carnival held last Sunday. The Lent, In addition to fasting; will also cover the Mystery of Prayer, Sacraments, Special Prayers, Repentance, and Confession.

The Lent begins 49 days before the feast day in the Holy Orthodox Churches, when we celebrate the unique enthusiasm of the Easter (Resurrection) Feast. In this context, the 49-day Lent has started with the Not Eating White Carnival celebrated last Sunday in all Orthodox Churches in the region.

At the end of the special service performed by Father İspir Teymur in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Michael and St. Gabriel in Mersin, the entire Orthodox community in the region entered the Lentlent before Easter. Orthodox in the region started the Meat Fast with another carnival celebrated a week ago.

In Orthodox Churches, the Sunday on which the Carnival of Not Eating White (Milk and Dairy Products) is celebrated is also called the Sunday of Forgiveness (Forgiveness) in the Liturgical language. At the end of the Lent, Easter will be celebrated with enthusiasm.
