Kadıköy Metropolitan Athanasios was dismissed due to his negative behavior towards the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Holy Assembly, and the Deputy Bishop Emmanuel, who served in the French Metropolis, was elected as the interim Patriarch in the French Metropolis. Kadıköy Metropolitan took over the task with a ceremony held at the Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church in Kadıköy on Saturday, March 20.
A mass was held at the Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church in Kadıköy for Emmanuel, who started his duty as of today. To the Mass, In addition to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Konstantinos Vlasis, Greek Deputy Minister of Education Zeta Makri, Athens Mayor Costas Bakoyanni; Representatives of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Ambassadors of the USA and Ukraine, Consuls General of Greece, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Montenegro and France, and representatives of the Christian community in Istanbul attended.

At the ceremony, Father Gregorios, Secretary General of the Assembly of the Holy Assembly, read the decision of the assembly to change the task. Then Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew made a speech. Giving information about the new metropolitan’s biography and himself, Bartholomew talked about the importance of Kadıköy Metropolitan for the Orthodox world and wished the new metropolitan good luck in his duty.

Later, Kadıköy Metropolitan Emmanuel Adamakis took over the duty and gave a speech. Adamakis; In his speech in 4 languages, ancient Greek, English, Turkish and French, he said, “Today is a very meaningful and exceptional day of my life. I was born on the island of Crete. I studied in Greece, France and America. After serving in Belgium and France, Our Spiritual Father Patriarch Bartholomew and You Synod Council unanimously deemed me worthy of Kadıköy Metropolitan. As I embark on this sacred duty, I thank our Almighty Lord and seek refuge in His grace. I will continue my 40-year spiritual life in Istanbul as the Metropolitan of Kadıköy, in this noble city where our Ecumenical Patriarchate is located. I would like to express my gratitude to the State of the Republic of Turkey, which accepted me into citizenship. Now I am from Turkey, from Istanbul and from Kadıköy. Thank you each and every one of you for accepting me among you and for attending today’s ceremony. I need your prayers so that I can do my best in my new role. I am starting a new and hopeful journey. We will join hands for a world where peace, love, understanding and dialogue prevail. Welcome. God bless you all.”
