The Ukrainian government applied to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul to become independent of the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate. The text prepared for the application for autonomy of the national church in Ukraine was accepted.
As a result of the intensive efforts of the President of Ukraine Petro Pozošenko, 268 deputies from the total of 450 from the Ukrainian Parliament accepted the application text designed for the establishment of an autonomous national church from the Patriarchate of Russia with the support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul.
It is known that President Petro Pozošenko held a special meeting with government officials to support this project in the days we passed.
In a written statement he made a few days ago, Porosenko declared that he did e a special meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I in his last visit to Istanbul. As a result of this meeting, he declared to His Holiness that Ukraine was as close as ever to building its national church.
According to the Orthodox Church laws, a church establishment must be recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul or recognized by at least 50% of the patriarchs.
Ukrainian pro-Western politicians have asked the Ecumenical Patriarch for his help in their visits to Istanbul.
