The frontside of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in İskenderun, which was heavily damaged in the earthquake, was destroyed. After the destruction, the bell towers on both sides of the church building were also in great danger. In order to avoid a possible accident, these bell towers were removed in a controlled manner.
In Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Iskenderun, which suffered great damage in the February 6 earthquake, has started the process of removing the bell towers, which pose a great danger. Before the operations carried out with cranes, in case of a possible collapse of the wall, supports were made with L-shaped iron profiles from the outside. When the restoration work begins, the bell towers will be reassembled in accordance with their original form.
The removal of the Bell Towers was carried out in line with the precautionary measures taken by the Foundation of the Iskenderun St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
The Iskenderun Church suffered the same fate shortly after its construction. The church, which was started to be built in the 1860s, was opened to worship after the completion of the construction works and was damaged in the great and destructive earthquake that occurred in Hatay in 1872. It was restored and opened to worship again in 1876.
